Maternity Session at Lily Park - Schoharie, NY

There’s something truly special about returning clients—seeing families grow, reconnecting, and creating something new together. When Mandy suggested Lily Park in Schoharie for their second maternity session, I was immediately intrigued. A quick online search revealed images of a charming covered bridge and a rocky stream, and I knew it had the potential to be a dream location.

I arrived at the park about an hour early to scout it out. The light was just perfect—sunny, soft, and slightly cool. The trees cast dappled shadows across the winding paths, and the lush greenery made everything feel calm and inviting. As I explored, I made mental notes of a few must-use spots, especially the Fox Trail Covered Bridge. It was brighter inside than expected, and it felt symbolic—this transitional moment for Mandy, Nick, and little Gwen as they prepare to welcome a baby boy into their family.

While walking the gravel path, I stumbled upon a quiet baseball field and, nearby, a gentle trail leading to a shallow stream. The water was ankle-deep and framed by mountains in the distance. It was picturesque, and I immediately thought, “This would be an incredible spot for some adventurous maternity photos.” Knowing Mandy’s adventurous spirit, I had pitched the idea of stepping into the stream—she was totally game.

When the family arrived, we caught up and admired how perfectly coordinated their outfits were. Gwen looked adorable with her shy head turning away and sweet pigtails as I greeted her. Since she's close in age to my own son, I knew she'd take a little time to warm up.

We began at the covered bridge, where I set up a light to help with the slightly darker entrance. As the family walked hand-in-hand through the bridge, I captured some tender, candid moments—like when I had them look back over their shoulders toward the camera. Instant favorite. As Gwen explored, Nick and Mandy both lovingly asked, “Where’s brother?” Gwen listened to her mama’s belly with curiosity, a moment so simple and full of love.

After a little coaxing and the promise of splashing in the water, we made our way toward the stream. Grandpa arrived just in time to help with Gwen, giving Nick and Mandy a chance to step into the water to pose together. And yes—we even got Grandpa in a few sweet photos with his granddaughter!

Now, here’s the part the photos don’t show: walking into that stream wasn’t as graceful as it might lookin the final shot! The rocks were slippery with algae, uneven, unstable and sometimes pokey. But once Nick and Mandy were in place, standing in sunlight at their backs with the mountains behind them, everything “clicked” (pun intended). The light was unreal—and I knew we were creating something truly magical.

Feeling inspired (and a little bold), I decided to join them in the water, camera and all. Shoes and socks off, I carefully balanced on the slick rocks. No sooner then a minute after I found stable footing, something wiggled or moved under the arch of my foot. Fish? Crayfish? Whatever it was, it startled me enough to yell, laugh, and nearly lose my balance—prompting some great genuine smiles from Mandy and Nick, which, of course, I captured.

After getting what we needed, I passed off my gear and clumsily “Gollumed” my way out of the stream, doing my best not to wipe out in front of everyone! (Mental note for next time: bring water shoes.)

We ended the session in the soft grass as the late afternoon sun began peeking through the trees. It was peaceful, relaxed, and the perfect way to wrap up such an adventurous session.

Nick and Mandy,

I’m so grateful for clients like you who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and trust me with important moments like your first maternity session, then Gwen’s first year photos, and now your second maternity session. Your growing family, the laughter, the unexpected stream antics—it all made for a session I won’t soon forget. I am so excited that you are bringing a baby boy into this world for little Gwen and our Ze to play with, hopefully on future camping trips. Gwen’s such a cutie and it’s so nice to have another couple who has a child close to our sons age and knows what parents are going through at this stage of their lives. I am so overly excited for you two and hope the rest of your maternity is smooth and uncomplicated.
